Chuwi DX1 is a 7 inch tablet/phone with a rotating camera

Some smartphone companies make it easier to take high-quality selfies by putting higher-quality cameras on the front of their phones. Others offer wireless lenses that you can use with a camera.

Then there are companies that just put a single camera on their devices — letting you rotate it to face the front or back as needed.

That last option hasn’t been all that common. But Chinese device maker Chuwi seems to be adopting it for its new 7 inch Chuwi DX1 smartphone/tablet.

The Chuwi DX1 features a MediaTek MT8382 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a 6.98 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel IPS display.

In other words, it has the specs of a mid-range phone with a very large screen. But what makes this model stand out is the camera.

Chuwi’s new device has a 13MP camera with an LED flash at the top of the phone. It’s placed on a hinge so that the camera can be positioned to face the back of the phone or the front.

The Chuwi DX1 features a 3000mAh battery, runs Android 4.4 software, and supports GSM and 3G networks. It’s not likely that this Chinese phone will support high-speed wireless networks in the United States, but it’s interesting to see another company opting for one rotating camera instead of two fixed-angle cameras.

Chuwi’s DX1 sells for about $133 in China.
