Huawei introduces Kirin 930 octa-core 64-bit CPU

Huawei has been developing its own chips for mobile devices including smartphones and tablets for a few years. The company’s latest is a 64-bit, 8-core chip called the Kirin 930. It could be used in upcoming smartphones and tablets such as the Huawei P8 and Huawei MediaPad X2.

kirin930The Kirin 930 uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture to pair 4 high-performance CPU cores with 4 lower-power cores as a way to balance performance and energy efficiency. But instead of using ARM Cortex-A57 and ARM Cortex-A53, the Kirin 930 uses what Huawei is calling an enhanced version of ARM’s Cortex-A53 design for its higher-power CPU cores.

So the chip has 4 Cortex-A53e cores with clock speeds up to 2.2 GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz. This means the Kirin 930 might not be as fast as some recent top-tier chips from Qualcomm, Samsung, and others. But it may also be less-power hungry, which could lead to longer battery life. The processor also uses ARM Mali-T628MP4 graphics, supports GSM, WCDMA, and LTE.
